Panthers blanked at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team registered its second consecutive shutout victory Wednesday, a 3-0 decision over Plymouth State College at Keefe Field.

The Lyons have now collected 19 consecutive victories at home dating back to October, 2000 while improving to 5-2 on the season. Plymouth State drops to 2-3-1 overall with the loss.

Senior Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA) also made history for the Lyons. With his assist on classmate David Wurm's (Dunstable, MA) goal in the 75th minute, Antoniuk notched his 30th career assist, breaking the three-year-old record held by former Wheaton All-American Jim Manganello.

The Blue and White opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Antoniuk took a crossing pass in the penalty box and was taken down from behind, resulting in a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, senior Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT) beat Panther goalkeeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, NJ) just inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

With neither team generating many scoring opportunities over the next 60 minutes, the Lyons finally added some insurance when Wurm headed in a rebounded shot off the foot of Antoniuk, giving the Lyons a 2-0 lead and Antoniuk the all-time assist mark.

Antoniuk and Wurm teamed up again eight minutes later to put the game away for good. Antoniuk tucked Wurm's pass under the crossbar for the game's final scoring. Wheaton freshman Max Hellman (Oklahoma City, OK) produced two saves on the afternoon in picking up his second consecutive shutout, while Wilby recorded five saves for Plymouth State.

Plymouth State, which was playing its first road game of the year, returns home to host UMass Boston Saturday (Sept. 28) at Panther Field (3:00 p.m.)
