ECSU nips PSC in overtime

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Senior MF Ryan Smith (Madison, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal just under seven minutes into sudden-victory overtime Saturday as Eastern Connecticut State University defeated Plymouth State College 2-1 in a Little East Conference men's soccer game at Thomas Nevers Field.

The Warriors improve to 4-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference, while PSC drops to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1 in LEC action. It is ECSU's first win against Plymouth State since a 5-0 home shutout in 1996, although the Panthers lead the career series, 18-8-1.

In the overtime frame, UCSU junior Kenny Romanchuck (Marlborough, Conn.) sent a kick on goal that was deflected right to Smith, who sent a left-footed shot past Panther goalkeeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, NJ) at 96:53. It was Smith's second goal of the season and fifth of his career.

The Warriors led 1-0 at halftime on freshman Brian Clark's (Patchogue, N.Y.) first career goal. The Panthers tied it up at 54:13 on sophomore Sebastian Rodriguez's (San Jose, Costa Rica) second goal of the year.

The Warriors outshot the Panthers, 17-15. Senior Arthur Lubniewski (Newington, Conn.) made six saves for ECSU, while Wilby recorded five saves for the Panthers. Plymouth State returns home for a key conference match-up next Saturday against arch-rival Keene State (1:00 p.m.).
