Culum leads PSC past LEC-leading WCSU

DANBURY, Conn. - Junior forward Chipe Culum (Manchester, N.H./Central) scored twice Saturday afternoon to lift Plymouth State College to a 2-1 victory over host Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference men's soccer action.

The win gets PSC back to the .500 mark (5-5-2 overall and 2-2 in the LEC), while Western, which was leading the conference, drops its second straight to fall to 10-2-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Culum scored both goals off corner kicks to give him a team-leading four on the season. His first goal of the afternoon was a header in the 47th minute assisted by Troy Silva (West Tisbury, MA). Culum gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage 21 minutes later, this time Kyle Bowman (Bedford, NH) picking up the assist.

The Colonials got on the scoreboard following Ari Tsingerliotis' (Norwalk, CT) penalty kick with nine minutes remaining in the contest. Western Connecticut was awarded the free kick after a Plymouth State defender had a hand ball called inside the box.

Junior keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, NJ) earned the victory in goal for the Panthers by making three saves, while Mark Pataky (Trumbull, CT) made three saves for the Colonials.

The Colonials host Rhode Island College this Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Midtown Campus Field. The Anchormen were in second place with a 2-0 league mark at the start of play on Saturday. Plymouth State continues its five-game road trip with an LEC contest Tuesday at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.).
