Panthers blank USM in key LEC match

GORHAM, Maine - Plymouth State College received goals from four players, including the game-winner from junior forward Chipe Culum (Manchester, N.H./Central), en route to a 4-0 Little East Conference win over the host University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The Panthers, who have now won three consecutive matches, improved to 6-5-2 overall and 3-2 in the league, while the Huskies, winless in their last eight matches (0-6-2), fell to 3-9-3 and 0-3-2.

Senior forward Sal Friello (West Haven, Conn.) set up the game-winning goal in the 16th minute, when his thrown-in sailed into the area. Junior forward Michael Cantelli (Raymond, N.H.) headed the throw towards the center of the net, where Culum redirected the shot into the far corner.

After taking the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break, Plymouth State took control of the game in the second half. The Panthers grabbed a 2-0 lead at 52 minutes on a goal by Friello, off a feed from Troy Silva (West Tisbury, Mass.).

The Panthers proceeded to put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in a span of 2:27. Senior Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) made in 3-0 at 64:35, before senior Rob Ball (Rockaway, N.J.) closed out the scoring at 67:02.

For the game, Plymouth State held a 10-4 edge in shots, while each side took five corner kicks. Southern Maine goalies Chris Williard (Hampton, Conn.) and Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.) combined for three saves, while Plymouth State netminder Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) registered a single stop.

The teams return to action on Saturday, when Plymouth continues its five-game road trip with a visit to Rhode Island College, while Southern Maine will travel to Eastern Connecticut. (Courtesy Southern Maine Sports Information)
