PSC defeats Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Troy Silva (West Tisbury, Mass.) registered a goal and two assists Saturday as Plymouth State College knocked off Rhode Island College 5-3 in a Little East Conference men's soccer game.

The victory, PSC's fourth in a row, improves the Panthers to 7-5-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while RIC falls to 10-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the LEC. The Panthers have just about locked up an LEC play-off berth with a week to go in the regular season. The LEC Tournament begins Nov. 6, and will include the top four teams in the conference.

Five different players tallied goals for the Panthers. Trailing 2-0 following a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes by RIC's Cory Lopes, Silva put PSC on the board at the 19-minute mark, with senior Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) assisting. Silva set up the next two goals, by senior Sal Friello (West Haven, Conn.) at 26:46 and junior Michael Cantelli (Raymond, N.H.) at 31:20, to give PSC its first lead of the game. Senior Jake Morley (Southampton, England) added another to help the Panthers to a 4-2 advantage at the break.

Lopes added his third of the game and 13th of the season to open the second-half scoring, but sophomore Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) added an insurance goal for PSC with 25 minutes remaining.

The PSC defense limited Kyle Teixeira, the Anchormen's leading scorer with 16 goals, to one assist on the day. Junior keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) recorded six saves, while RIC's Jason Nelson made two stops.

PSC wraps up the regular season this week with two games - a non-conference encounter Wednesday at Gordon College (2:00 p.m.) and the regular season finale next Saturday (Nov. 2) at home against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.)
