PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Despite playing a man down for the final 55 minutes, the Plymouth State University men's soccer team defeated Gordon College 1-0 Wednesday in the home opener at Panther Field.
The Panthers improve to 2-0-0 overall, while the Fighting Scots, who tied defending national champion Messiah earlier this fall, drop to 2-1-1.
Senior Sal Friello (West Haven, CT) banged home a loose ball in front of Gordon keeper Peter Hassler (Westford, VT) in the 5th minute, which proved to be enough. Senior Kyle Bowman (Manchester, N.H.) picked up an assist on the play.
PSU senior goalkeeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, NJ) made a terrific save in the 31st minute stopping Gordon's exciting sophomore Matt Smith (Altamonte, FL) as he broke through the Panther defense.
The Panthers turned in a complete team effort, playing with only 10 players after a PSU player received a red card late in the first half.
PSU goalkeeper Wilby made six saves en route to his first shutout of the season, while GC keeper Hassler made eight saves.
Plymouth State is back in action Saturday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Salem State. Gordon College returns home to host WPI Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
