Panther Mens Soccer shuts out Bates
LEWISTON, Maine - Freshman Felix Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) scored two goals in the final 13 minutes Wednesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University's men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Bates College in a non-league game on Bates' Russell Street Field.
Plymouth State improved to 7-1-0, posting its fourth consecutive shutout victory, while Bates fell to 2-4-1 with the loss.
Junior Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) gave Plymouth State a 1-0 lead just over 30 minutes into the game after getting a through ball from sophomore Steve Balgach (Fairfield, Conn.). Rodriguez, who was unmarked at the top of the penalty area, took two touches in deep and beat Kenly low to the right side.
After Bobcat goalkeeper James Kenly (Boxford, Mass.) made a nice diving save to keep Bates within one goal of the Panthers, Rosen made it 2-0 by knocking home a rebound. Less than 10 minutes later, Rosen increased the margin to three goals when he redirected a header by senior Michael Cantelli (Raymond, N.H.) by the near post on the right side.
The Panthers, who have allowed only three goals all season, kept Bates scoring chances to a minimum. Kyle Rushton (Windham, N.H.), however, had two great scoring chances thwarted by Panther senior goalkeeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.). Early in the first half, Ithai Schori (New York, N.Y.) fed Rushton from the right side, and Rushton beat a defender and sent a hard shot to the top left corner, but Wilby made a leaping save, deflecting the ball out of harms way with his right hand. Wilby, who ranks 24th nationally in saves per game, also made a nice stop on a 30-yard direct kick by Rushton headed for the right post.
Wilby, who was named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, made five saves to post his sixth shutout in eight games this season, while Kenly stopped four shots for Bates. Tom Hutcheon (Teaneck, N.J) also kept a sure goal out of the net, blocking a rebound shot by Rodriguez with Kenly unable to recover.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action this Saturday at home against Eastern Connecticut (2:15 p.m.). The Bobcats return to New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Williams.
Saturday's PSU game will be preceded Saturday at 10:00 a.m. by the annual Alumni game.
