PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's soccer team will make its sixth post-season appearance in the last seven years, and ninth in the last 11 years, when the Panthers compete this week in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers are the second seed in the tourney, and will host seventh-seeded Salve Regina University on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Panther Field. Wednesday's first-round winners will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at the sites of the two highest remaining seeds, and the championship game is slated for Sunday afternoon at the home of the highest remaining seed.
The rest of the ECAC Tournament field includes top-seeded Roger Williams, #3 Keene State, #4 Coast Guard, #5 Brandeis, #6 WPI, and #8 Rhode Island College. Roger Williams captured last year's championship, and Plymouth State won the title in 2001.
Plymouth State, led by second-year head coach Rob Wright, will bring an impressive 12-3-2 overall record into the tournament. The Panthers shared the Little East Conference regular season title with a 5-1-1 conference record, but were ousted from the LEC Tournament in the semifinals by eventual champion Western Connecticut. This will be PSU's first post-season appearance since winning the ECAC championship two years ago.
Salve Regina rebounded from an 0-3 start and takes a 13-8-1 record into this week's tournament. The Seahawks were eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament in the semifinals by Gordon College, 2-1. Salve ended up last year at 11-12-1 overall, which included the CCC Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
PSU is also making its eighth ECAC appearance. The Panthers' previous selections came in 1973, 1981, 1985, 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2001, winning championships in '81, '85 and '01.
