Catatao leads PSU Mens Soccer past Salem State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Chris Catatao (Burlington, Mass.) scored a pair of first half goals Saturday afternoon and Plymouth State University went on to post an easy 5-0 victory over Salem State College in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Panther Field.
Catatao gave the hosts an early lead with his first goal less than four minutes into the game, assisted by junior Adam Bakanosky (Hampstead, N.H.). Catatao's crossing pass approximately 10 minutes later was deflected by a Viking defender into the net to put the Panthers ahead by two. Bakanosky then added his first goal of the season with four seconds left in the first half to stake PSU to 3-0 lead at the break.
The Panthers, who had a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal, put the game away in the second half on goals by sophomores R.C. Mooney (Roseland, N.J.) and Felix Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden).
Senior Jayson Smith (Northwood, N.H.) made two saves in the Panther net to register his first shutout of the season and the third of his career. Junior Tim Doucette (Boxford, Mass.) made four saves for the Vikings.
PSU, 3-0-0 and ranked seventh in New England, faces a tough test on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. with a road game at Bowdoin, which is ranked fourth in New England and 25th in the nation in Division III. Salem State, 1-2-0, plays its fourth straight road game Tuesday at Gordon (3:30 p.m.).
