Tufts blanks Plymouth State Men’s Soccer

SOMERVILLE, Mass. - The Tufts University men's soccer team continued its sharp play of late with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Plymouth State University Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

The victory is the third in a row and fourth in five games for Tufts, which improved to 6-3-1 overall.  The visiting Panthers (6-5-1) are now winless in their last three (0-2-1).

Tufts had the upper hand nearly from start to finish.  They went up 1-0 on the third goal of the season by Mike Guigli (North Stonington, Conn.) in the 32nd minute of play.  The talented junior beat Plymouth State keeper Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) high.

The Jumbos continued to test Custance, who finished with eight saves, but were unable to add to their lead.  PSU had some runs at the other end, but didn't match the Jumbos in quality scoring opportunities.

Tufts' leading scorer Todd Gilbert (Chicago, Ill.) set up sophomore Ben Castellot (Newton, Mass.) on a goal in the 72nd minute that game the Jumbos a 2-0 lead.  The goal was the third in the last two games for Castellot and gave the hosts a comfortable margin.

In the Tufts goal, seniors Matt Sullivan (Medfield, Mass.) and Scott Conroy (Madison, Conn.) shared the shutout.  Sullivan made four saves in the first half and Conway, the captain playing for the first time since Oct. 2 due to a knee injury, made two saves.

The victory was a measure of revenge for Tufts after losing 3-0 last year at Plymouth.

PSU returns home for a key Little East Conference match-up Saturday against Southern Maine (3:00 p.m.).  Tufts visits Trinity Saturday for a New England Small Conference Athletic Conference clash (11:00 a.m.)
