RIC records first victory over PSU Mens Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) scored his 20th goal of the season and the 62nd of his collegiate career Saturday afternoon, leading Rhode Island College to a 3-0 victory over Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference men's soccer regular season finale for both schools.
Teixeira, who lead the LEC in scoring, tied the RIC men's soccer record for the most career goals. The win was also RIC's first-ever over the Panthers. The Anchormen had lost the last 18 meetings between the two clubs. RIC tied PSU in 1985 and 1981, but was 0-21-2 all-time against the Panthers.
The Anchormen finish the regular season with a 10-7-2 overall record and 4-2-1 mark in the Little East. RIC finished in second place in the conference, the highest LEC finish in the program's history, and will host PSU in an LEC semifinal playoff game this Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 2:30 p.m.
Plymouth State wrapped up the regular season at 9-6-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Panthers are the third seed in the LEC Tournament, and will make a return visit to RIC on Wednesday.
Freshman James Nigrelli (Ashaway, R.I.) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute, heading in a pass from Teixeira. Teixeira added his goal in the 49th minute and sophomore Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored on a pass from sophomore Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, R.I.) in the 80th minute to seal the win.
RIC freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, R.I.) made three saves, including two key stops from point blank range in the early going, to earn his fifth shutout of the 2004 campaign. PSU senior netminder Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) made four saves in a losing effort.
