RIC knocks PSU Men’s Soccer out of Little East Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) broke the Rhode Island College career scoring record Wednesday afternoon, leading the second-seeded Anchormen to a 3-1 victory over third-seeded Plymouth State University in the semifinals of the 2004 Little East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

The outcome was RIC's first-ever LEC Tournament victory, and sends the Anchormen, 11-7-2 overall, to the Championship game this Saturday, Nov. 6, against the winner of Wednesday night's match between fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University and top-seeded Keene State College.  If Keene State wins, the Owls will host the title game; if ECSU emerges as the winner, RIC will host the championship game.

Teixeira scored on a free kick in the 82nd minute to break his school's career goal scoring mark.  It was his 21st goal of the season and the 63rd of his career. He broke the 27-year old record by Domenico Petrarca.  Teixeira trails Petrarca's all-time points record of 147 by six points.

RIC freshman James Nigrelli (Ashaway, R.I.) gave the Anchormen a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, heading in a corner kick from sophomore Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, R.I.). Sophomore Chris Childs (Cranston, R.I.) scored what proved to be the eventual game-winning goal in the 71st minute, giving the Anchormen a 2-0 lead.

Plymouth State cut the lead to one when sophomore Felix Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

Teixeira was taken down by PSU senior goalkeeper Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) in the 82nd minute and scored shortly thereafter. Custance was issued a red card on the play and was replaced by senior Jayson Smith (Northwood, N.H.), while the Panthers played out the final eight minutes one man down.

RIC freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, R.I.) won his third straight game, making five saves in the victory. Custance made four stops in a losing effort.

PSU, 9-7-1 overall, hopes to receive an ECAC Tournament berth when the invitations are announced on Monday.
