PSU Mens Soccer blanks Gordon
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University scored a pair of second-half goals in its home opener Wednesday afternoon to pull out a 2-0 victory over Gordon College in a non-conference men's soccer match at Panther Field. The Panthers remain unbeaten this season (2-0-1) while Gordon falls to 0-1-0.
It was a scoreless first half, with PSU registering six shots and Gordon five. The Fighting Scots had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard first with 30:30 on the second-half clock when Chris Neffinger was awarded a penalty kick, but PSU freshman keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) made a superb save diving to his left to keep Gordon off the board.
Three minutes later, PSU sophomore Jamal Luttamaguzi (Stockholm, Sweden) took a free kick from just outside the goal box, curled it around the Gordon wall, off keeper Peter Hassler's hands and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
PSU added an insurance marker with 20 minutes remaining when sophomore Seth Desjardins (Wakefield, N.H.) blasted a shot on goal that was stopped by Hassler, but freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) deposited the rebound into the goal for his second of the season.
Plymouth State finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots. Both Shute and Hassler finished with five saves.
The Panthers play their next four games on the road, beginning Saturday at Salem State (2:00 p.m. Gordon also returns to action Saturday with a visit to Eastern Nazarene (1:00 p.m.)
