Plymouth State and Tufts battle to 1-1 tie in men’s soccer

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University and Tufts University battled for 110 minutes Wednesday evening, and in the end the two teams settled for a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a non-conference men's soccer match at Panther Field.

Senior Brad Wyman (Durham, N.H.) scored Plymouth State's goal midway through the first half, and junior Mattia Chason (Rome, Italy) answered for the Jumbos with 14 minutes to play in the second half. PSU, ranked eighth in New England, is now 8-1-2 overall while Tufts moves to 3-5-1.

The Jumbos nearly got on the board first, but a header by junior Ben Castellot (Newton, Mass.) was stopped on the goal line by PSU defender Bryan Biederman (Holderness, N.H.) just five minutes into the contest.

The Panthers broke through in the 19th minute when Wyman headed a loose ball out of the air and into the net for his third goal of the season. PSU almost got another goal before the end of the half, but Tufts freshman keeper Brian Dulmovits (Sayville, N.Y.) made a diving stop on a shot by Panther senior Chris Catatao (Burlington, Mass.)

Tufts had two excellent opportunities midway through the second half, but PSU freshman keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) made a pair of strong saves on shots by sophomore Dan Jozwiak (Boulder, Col.) and senior Todd Gilbert (Chicago, Ill.) Plymouth State had a chance to go up by two goals, but a shot by freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) on a breakaway curled wide left.

Chason evened the match with 14:06 on the clock, booting a loose ball out of mid-air and into the net, setting up the extra time. Each team had a good chance in the first overtime, but could not convert.

PSU had a slim 15-13 advantage in shots. Both Dulmovits and Shute finished with six saves.

The Panthers are back in Little East Conference action Saturday, hosting Western Connecticut in an 11:00 a.m. clash at Panther Field. The Jumbos return home to host NESCAC rival Trinity on Saturday in their final regular season home match (4:00 p.m)
