Plymouth State to celebrate 50 years of Men’s Soccer

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Friends and alumni of the Plymouth State University men's soccer program will be coming to Plymouth from all over the globe this weekend as the Panthers celebrate the 50th season of men's soccer at Plymouth State.

The first varsity men's soccer contest was in 1957 when the institution was known as Plymouth Teachers College. The opening contest was against Gorham Teachers College (now the University of Southern Maine), which was also playing its first game. This Sunday, Oct. 8, the two schools will meet again at 1:00 p.m. at Panther Field, both programs celebrating 50 years of competition.

Sunday's anniversary game is part of a weekend long celebration. Among the other activities are a men's soccer alumni golf outing, an alumni reception on Saturday evening, an alumni soccer game on Sunday morning, and the 50th Year Banquet on Sunday evening. Plymouth State Men's Soccer has long had a strong international flavor to its roster, and many of the former players will be arriving from all over the world.

The weekend also marks the official debut of the improvements and renovations at Panther Field. Included in the upgrades are new goals, team benches and dugouts, signage at the field, and a new sound system.

"We have a tremendous tradition of men's soccer at Plymouth State," said PSU head coach Rob Wright, "and the alumni are very close to each other. We're thrilled with the number of alums who are returning this weekend. We think it's going to be a wonderful event."

The 2006 Panthers are enjoying an outstanding season to date. The Panthers are 7-1-1 overall, ranked in the top 10 in New England, and own the top spot in the Little East Conference with a 3-0-0 mark. PSU knocked off 12th-ranked Keene State in its last outing, 1-0 in overtime.

The weekend's festivities were organized by Coach Wright and Scott and Patti Biederman, PSU alumni who are local business owners and the parents of PSU senior co-captain Bryan Biederman.

Any alumni who are interesting in participating in the festivities are encouraged to contact Coach Wright at 603-535-2516 or rjwright@plymouth.edu.
