PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were honored by the Little East Conference Monday with selections as Player of the Week in the sports of field hockey and men's soccer.
Senior Ashley Gutowski (Conway, N.H./Kennett) was named LEC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan) was tabbed as LEC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week. They were instrumental in PSU's two teams combining for a 3-0-1 record on the week.
A senior forward, Gutowski (right) registered six points last week on two goals and two assists, leading the Panthers to a pair of LEC victories. She scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half in a 2-1 win over Southern Maine on Tuesday, after assisting on PSU's first goal, and added a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-1 victory over Worcester State.
Gutowski has now scored at least a point in four straight games, and leads the Panthers with 33 points (12 goals and a team-high nine assists). She ranks second in the LEC in points, tied for second in assists and tied for fifth in goals.
A freshman midfielder, Cabral (left) scored a goal in each game for PSU last week as the Panthers posted a 1-0-1 week. He tallied PSU's first goal in Wednesday's 4-3 win at Castleton, and he scored the first goal of the game Saturday against UMass Dartmouth in what turned out to be a 2-2 tie.
Cabral is now third on the team in scoring with five goals and 10 points. He is also second on the Panthers and third in the LEC in scoring among freshmen.
Both Panther teams will wrap up the regular season this week. The Panther field hockey squad hosts Springfield in a non-conference game on Thursday and travels to Bridgewater State for the LEC finale on Saturday, and the men's soccer team has just one game, Saturday at home in a Little East affair against UMass Boston. The field hockey team has locked up home field advantage in the first round of next week's LEC Tournament, while the men's soccer team needs a win against UMB to have a shot at the conference tournament.
