Mehmedovic goal leads PSU Mens Soccer past Ithaca

BRISTOL, R.I. - Senior Semir Mehmedovic (Zvornik, Bosnia/Franklin, N.H.) scored a goal on a free kick midway through the first half Saturday afternoon, and that stood as the difference as the Plymouth State University men's soccer team defeated Ithaca College, 1-0, on the first day of the fifth annual Roger Williams Turfer Classic.
The Panthers will meet host Roger Williams in the championship match on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., as RWU defeated Fitchburg State, 4-0, in Saturday's first game. Ithaca and Fitchburg State will play in the consolation game Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Ithaca doubled up Plymouth State in the shots department by counts of 10-5 in the first half, 6-3 in the second half and 16-8 for the game. The Bombers also took seven corner kicks to just two for PSU. Panther freshman goalkeeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) recorded the victory with a four-save effort in his first career start.
Plymouth State opened the season with five newcomers in its starting line-up, including Ohlsson, senior transfer Amsal Alic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Concord, N.H.), and freshmen Joakim Martinsson (Morlunda, Sweden), Aly El Tambouly (Cairo, Egypt), and Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.)
