Two PSU student-athletes earn LEC weekly honors
Panthers honored in women’ s tennis and men’s soccer
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State
University student-athletes were recognized Tuesday with top weekly
honors from the Little East Conference for their performances in
the season-opening games last weekend.
Sophomore Rachel Figura (Cheshire, Conn.) was named LEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, and freshman Andres Olsson (Sturefors, Sweden) was selected LEC Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. The announcements came Tuesday during the first week of the season for LEC accolades.
A 5’1” sophomore lefthander, Figura
(right) won both her matches on Saturday to lead PSU
to a 6-3 Little East victory over the University of Southern Maine.
She won her singles match at No. 2 in straight sets after teaming
with junior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) for an
8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.
A 6’1, 187-pound midfielder, Olsson (left) was named
to the All-Tournament Team last weekend at the Roger Williams
Turfer Classic in Bristol, R.I., where PSU advanced to the
championship round. Olsson converted the first goal of the
game Saturday against Norwich on a bicycle kick in the 18-yard box
in the 26th minute.
Both Panther teams have home games this week. The PSU women’s tennis team hosts Worcester State on Tuesday (Sept. 7) and Endicott College on Thursday (Sept. 9), both matches beginning at 3:30 p.m. The PSU men’s soccer team plays at home on Wednesday (Sept. 8) and Saturday (Sept. 11), hosting Salem State and Bridgewater State, respectively, at 4:30 p.m.
