Panthers to host Husson on Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island College men¹s soccer team scored three first half goals and played shutout defense Saturday afternoon as the Anchormen defeated Plymouth State University, 3-0, in Little East Conference play at the RIC Soccer Field.

The Anchormen improve to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in Little East play, while the Panthers fall to 3-7-1 and 0-4, respectively.

RIC took an early lead in the 12th minute when junior Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) fired a free kick from just outside the box in the vicinity of the goal, where it ricochet off a PSU defender and into the left side of the goal to give RIC the lead.  The Anchormen increased their lead in the 20th minute when junior Mike Patriarca (Warren, R.I.) dribbled up to the right end line and delivered a perfect pass to senior Louis Tavares (East Providence, R.I.), who sent his shot from in front of the goal straight up into the ceiling of the net to double the advantage, 2-0.

Patriarca rounded out the scoring in the 37th minute, delivering a bouncing shot past the dive of sophomore keeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden).  Sophomore defender Tucker Shepard (Tiverton, R.I.) earned an assist for his direct throw-in to Patriarca.

Ohlsson registered four saves in net for the Panthers.  RIC junior keeper Nic Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) improved to 8-2 on the season, making two saves en route to his fifth shutout.

PSU has less than 24 hours to regroup, as the Panthers host Husson College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  Rhode Island College will host Salem State on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
