Salem State blanks PSU Men’s Soccer

Panthers look for first win Saturday at Bridgewater

SALEM, Mass. – Luiz DaCuhna scored midway through the first period and the Salem State Vikings shut down the Plymouth State University Panthers the rest of the way on Wednesday night to earn a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer victory at Alumni Field.

DaCunha beat Panthers goalie Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) with a shot on the left side at the 20:52 mark to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Salem State and Plymouth played evenly throughout the rest of the first period with each team registering six shots before the break.

The Panthers picked up the offensive tempo in the second half as they totaled 11 shots in the period, but failed to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities. Junior Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.) had the best chance to score with 17:10 remaining, but his shot sailed just wide of the net.

The game remained tight in the second half until junior Maxime Mondestin netted a goal on a feed from Carlos Escobar at the 84:50 mark to give the Vikings a two-goal lead.  Raphael Santos closed out the scoring when he took a pass from Owen Quane and redirected a shot past Ohlsson from directly in front of the box with just under three minutes remaining.

Nondas Karagakis earned the win for Salem State by making six stops. Ohlsson recorded two saves for the visitors, who were shutout for the second straight game.

The Panthers, 0-2-0, are on the road this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match against Bridgewater State while Salem State, 3-1, plays again next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against UMass Dartmouth.
