UMD nips PSU Men’s Soccer
Panthers' scoring struggles continue
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Victor Ferreira scored the only goal of the game three minutes in Saturday afternoon as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth defeated visiting Plymouth State University, 1-0, in the Little East Conference men's soccer opener for both teams at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs continued the strong start to their season, improving to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East, while Plymouth State dropped to 0-5 and 0-1 in LEC action. PSU has managed just one goal in five games.
UMD struck just over three minutes into the game when sophomore defender Alex Machado received the ball at midfield and delivered a deep pass behind the Panther defense to Ferreira, who chipped the ball over Panther junior goalkeeper Bjorn Ohlsson. UMD had an opportunity to increase its lead when freshman Ryland Foster-Gorbach gathered the loose ball in front of an open net, but fired a shot off the right post.
Corsairs junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan preserved UMD's one-goal lead in the second half when he made a diving save PSU defender Joakim Martinsson that was destined for the upper left corner of the net. Phelan followed that up by shutting down a breakaway attempt by Jake Sjoberg three minutes later, stifling any momentum built by the Panthers.
Another opportunity came for the Panthers with 31:15 to play, but junior Parker Spear missed wide right. Sjoberg had the chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Phelan dove backwards and got just enough of his hand on the ball to tip it away, securing the 1-0 victory.
UMass Dartmouth out shot Plymouth State, 20-14. Phelan made eight saves and recorded his second shutout of the season, while Ohlsson stopped four shots for the Panthers.
The Corsairs return to action Tuesday when they visit Salve Regina. Plymouth State hosts Castleton State Wednesday.
