Panthers pick up first win of season
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Dre Cabral scored his second goal of the game three minutes into overtime Wednesday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 3-2 victory over Castleton State College in a non-conference men's soccer match at Panther Field.
The Panthers, searching for their first win of the season, held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but needed Cabral's golden goal at the 3:14 mark of the extra session to pull out the victory. Junior Parker Spear assisted on both Cabral goals as the Panthers improved to 1-5 on the season. Castleton had its overall mark evened at 3-3-1.
PSU got on the board first with a transition goal in the 22nd minute. Senior Alex Martins left a drop pass for sophomore Jake Sjoberg, who rifled the ball into the lower left corner from 20 yards out.
Castleton nearly evened the score in the 29th minute on a strong shot by junior Trevor Kotrady, but Panther keeper Bjorn Ohlsson got a piece of it and the ball ricocheted off the goalpost. The Spartans then tied the score two minutes later when sophomore Dominic Heller sent a through ball to the right hand side of the box, and Kotrady beat a Panther defender and slipped the ball under the keeper for his fifth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
Plymouth State regained the lead midway through the second half when Spear fed Cabral with a through ball up the middle and Cabral's shot snuck inside the far post. That lead lasted a little more than 10 minutes until freshman Vincent Addonisio found a loose volley in the box for Castleton and knocked it in off the far post to tie the score at 2-2 with 12:48 remaining in regulation.
Castleton nearly took the lead a minute later but a blast by sophomore Nick Hallett from 25 yards out clanged off the crossbar.
The game-winner came after Castleton sophomore keeper Nate Koenemann made two excellent saves from close range against both Cabral and Spear, but Cabral's final attempt gave the home team its first win of the season.
PSU finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots, including 4-0 in the overtime session. Koenemann made six saves for Castleton and Ohlsson made four saves for the Panthers.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference play this Saturday, hosting Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:30 p.m. Castleton hosts New England College Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in a North Atlantic Conference match-up.
