Panthers drop LEC match to Warriors
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Eastern Connecticut State University scored a pair of goals on headers off corner kicks Saturday afternoon en route to a 3-0 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men's soccer match at Panther Field.
Sophomore Christopher Giustina headed home the first goal for Eastern midway through the first half for the eventual game-winner, and freshman Nicholas Demo added another on a header midway through the second half. Eastern went on to improve to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the LEC, while PSU drops to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Giustina broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute when his header off a corner kick feed from junior Jon DeCasanova found its way in by the near post. That stood as the only score of the first half, with Eastern having a 5-4 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.
It was still a one-goal game 15 minutes into the second half when a defensive breakdown in the Panther end of the field led to a Warrior own goal. Demo made it 3-0 with a beautiful header off a corner kick taken by junior Carl Stensland that went into the far side of the goal with 21 minutes remaining.
PSU actually finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots. Senior keeper Carl Appel collected the victory for the Warriors, making five saves in the first 75 minutes, while junior Jordan Munsell stopped two shots over the final 15 minutes.
Both teams play non-conference games on Tuesday, PSU visiting Daniel Webster College and Eastern Conn. hosting Salem State University.
