Anchormen tie it late and win it in second OT
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Bruno Costa scored the game-winning goal two minutes into the second overtime Saturday afternoon to give Rhode Island College a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference men's soccer action at Panther Field.
Costa's goal capped an Anchorman comeback that included the game-tying goal by senior Troy Silvia in the 89th minute of regulation play that forced the extra sessions. The outcome lifts RIC to 9-7 overall and into a tie for second place in the LEC with a 4-2 league record, while PSU falls to 4-10 overall and out of playoff contention at 2-4 in conference play.
The teams played back and forth soccer the first 45 minutes, with neither team able to break through into the scoring column. Both goaltenders, RIC senior Nick Clark and PSU junior Bjorn Ohlsson, made some excellent saves to keep all zeroes on the scoreboard.
PSU finally broke through in the 59th minute when senior Dre Cabral collected a rebound and knocked home his fourth goal of the season. That starting looking like the game-winner as the clock counted down, but RIC had other ideas. Silvia pounced on a rebound in the box in the final two minutes, making his first goal of the season count, forcing overtime.
The Anchormen won the game in the second overtime when freshman Patrick LaRoche sent a free kick from the left sideline into the box, and Costa headed the ball past the keeper into the far corner for the golden goal, his fourth goal of the season.
RIC finished with a slim 13-12 margin in shots, while PSU had an 11-6 advantage in the corner kick department. Ohlsson finished with nine saves for PSU while Clark made five stops for RIC.
The Panthers get right back into action Sunday with a non-conference match at Babson College. RIC plays a non-conference affair Wednesday at Johnson & Wales University.
