Spear leads Panthers' second-half outburst
SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y./Sodus Central) scored a pair of second half goals Friday afternoon as Plymouth State University turned a 0-0 halftime score in a 4-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in the first ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Fall Classic on the Cape, hosted by the ECAC at Homer Park.
A returning All-Little East Conference midfielder, Spear broke the scoreless deadlock in the 64th minute when he drove in a rebound off a blast from freshman Petro Masumbuko (Manchester, N.H.) to the lower right corner. Spear took an assist from junior Christian Bua (Guilford, N.H.) from the right corner 12 minutes later and shot from the right side to the lower left of Colby-Sawyer goal keeper Marc-Andre Parent (South Yarmouth, Mass.).
Bua also assisted on the third goal as he fed freshman Ted Karlstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) in the center of the field. Karlstrand sent the ball to the lower left side out of Parent's reach.
The Panthers' fourth goal was scored by junior Santi Aguilar (Lima, Peru) in the 87th minute as he drilled a shot from 20 yards that deflected off a Charger defender and hugged the right post. Aguilar had entered the game just a minute earlier, and the goal was his first as a Panther after having suffered season-ending injuries in the prior two pre-seasons.
PSU dominated the game offensively, outshooting Colby-Sawyer 17-5. Parent finished the contest with four saves, while senior Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) recorded the clean sheet with a pair of saves, both in the first half.
Plymouth State will play John Jay College of Criminal Justice at 1:00 on Saturday in the second game of the Classic. Colby Sawyer will face John Jay at 1:00 Sunday.
