Men's Soccer defeats Daniel Webster
Panthers post non-conference win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team won its second straight match Wednesday evening, defeating Daniel Webster College, 3-1, in a non-conference game at Panther Field.
The Panthers got first-half goals from freshman Petro Masumbuko (Manchester, N.H./Central) and junior Santi Aguilar (Lima, Peru) and a second-half strike from junior Jacob Sjoberg (Linkoping, Sweden) to earn the victory. The Eagles countered with a penalty kick goal by sophomore Brad Hosey (Salem, N.H.) late in the first half, but PSU maintained a comfortable margin in the second half. The Panthers move to 4-7 overall while Daniel Webster slips to 1-8-2.
Masumbuko opened the scoring for PSU midway through the first half. Sophomore Joss Knol (Wellington, New Zealand) fed the ball to Masumbuko in the offensive box, and Masumbuko made a reverse move around the keeper before sending home his fourth goal of the season.
Daniel Webster nearly tied the game with five minutes to go in the first half but a header by senior Eliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) bounced off the goal post. Moments later, the Panthers extended the margin to 2-0 when Aguilar collected a loose ball about 40 yards out, turned a fired a laser that went over the keeper's head into the back of the goal. The Eagles managed to get on the board less than two minutes before the break when a player was fouled just inside the box and Hosey stepped up and fired home a goal on the penalty kick.
Knol set up PSU's third goal in the 59th minute as well, centering a pass from near the left end line to Sjoberg in the middle, and he booted a low liner just inside the right goal post. Neither team was able to break through over the final 30 minutes of play.
PSU finished with an 18-12 margin in shots, while each team took three corner kicks. Senior keeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) recorded the victory for PSU, making four saves. Freshman Sean Hamilton (Brookline, N.H.) and sophomore Sal Santa Maria (Thomaston, Conn.) each played a half in the Eagles goal, Hamilton making two saves and Santa Maria five.
