Panthers hold off late Viking rally
SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.) scored two goals and Plymouth State University stemmed Salem State University's late rally to claim a 5-3 victory on Wednesday night in a non-conference men's soccer match at Alumni Field.
Salem State's Eryk Fernandez (Nipomo, Calif.) scored three times in the final eight minutes, but it was not enough. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and withstood a furious rally by the Vikings to improve to 1-2 on the year. Salem State remains winless at 0-3.
Plymouth State scored twice in the opening ten minutes on a Christian Bua (Gilford, NH) long-distance goal from the left side, and Herbert's first score of the year to take a 2-0 lead. Herbert added his second goal of the game at the 20:26 mark when he broke free, and scored from just outside the box to make it a 3-0 game at halftime.
The second half was a game of possession until Alex Estupinan (New York, N.Y.) scored the Panthers' fourth goal off an assist from Graham Hughes (Billerica, Mass.). With the game well in hand, Plymouth State was cruising toward a shutout win, until Fernandez netted back-to-back goals, three minutes apart to draw the Vikings to within 4-2 with just over five minutes remaining. However, Adam Edmunds (Wilton, N.H.) gave the Panthers some breathing room with a goal at the 85 minute mark before Fernandez secured his hat-trick in the 89th minute that made the final 5-3.
The Vikings' Nondas Kargakis (Herkalion, Greece) stopped six shots while the Panthers' Sam Whipple (Kingston, N.H.) made eight saves in the victory. Danny Marsh (Farmington, CT) finished the game in net for Plymouth State, which snapped a three-game skid (0-2-1) against Salem State.
The Vikings will play at UMass Boston at home next Wednesday at 4:00, while Plymouth State takes on Castleton in its home opener Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Panther Field.
