PSU Men’s Soccer drops home opener to Castleton
Sjoberg, Hughes score second-half goals for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Dameon Young (Fairfax, Vt.) tallied a goal and an assist Saturday afternoon as Castleton State College spoiled the home opener for the Plymouth State University men's soccer team with a 4-2 non-conference victory at Panther Field.
Down 3-0 at the half, PSU added a pair of second-half goals by senior Jacob Sjoberg (Linkoping, Sweden) and sophomore Graham Hughes (Billerica, Mass.), but sophomore Jake Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) added an insurance marker for the visitors to preserve the victory. Castleton improves to 3-1-1 on the season while PSU dips to 1-3-0.
Sophomore Blake Hart (Farmington, Maine) gave the visitors the lead four minutes into the contest, blasting the ball from the top of the box into an open net after a nice touch-pass from senior John Kendall (Springfield, Vt.). Young scored Castleton's second goal on a penalty kick in the 19th minute, knocking the ball into the right side of the goal, and he assisted on the next Spartan score by junior Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, Vt.) 10 minutes later to push the Spartans to a 3-0 advantage.
PSU's best chance in the first half came with two minutes remaining when Sjoberg received a nice pass from senior Christian Bua (Gilford, N.H.) but Sjoberg's shot was wide left.
The Panthers wasted little time after the break, as Sjoberg got a beautiful through-ball from senior Adam Groves (Brooksville, Maine) and split the Castleton defense just a minute into the second half, firing the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season. The Spartans answered six minutes later with a 2-on-1 break as Kendall set up Tietgens to reinstate the three-goal margin.
Hughes picked up a loose ball near the right side of the top of the box with 14 minutes remaining and blasted a shot past the keeper that found the upper left part of the goal to make it 4-2. The Panthers had some momentum in the final 10 minutes, but a shot by sophomore Adam Edmunds (Wilton, N.H.) was tipped away by the keeper and a shot by Groves with three minutes remaining bounced off the left goal post.
Senior Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) made six saves to earn the win in goal for the Spartans. Sophomores Danny Marsh (Farmington, Conn.) and Sam Whipple (Kingston, N.H.) split time in the Panther goal.
PSU is back on the road again Wednesday with a visit to Daniel Webster College (3:30 p.m.), while Castleton visits New England College next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
