PSU Men’s Soccer and Rhode Island College play to scoreless deadlock
Panthers unbeaten in last six (3-0-3) with just two goals allowed
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University and Rhode Island College combined for 25 shots Saturday afternoon, but neither team was able to score and the two teams settled for a scoreless draw in a Little East Conference men's soccer match at Panther Field.
RIC finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots for the game. The Anchormen also had a 6-4 margin in corner kicks. A pair of freshmen goalkeepers earned shutouts as PSU's Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made six saves to post his second whitewash while RIC's Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I.) made three saves for his third clean sheet.
Strong defensive efforts were turned in by senior Adam Groves (Brooksville, Maine) and freshman Josh McLaughlin (Holliston, Mass.) in the PSU defensive zone, and by juniors Kwasi Boateng (East Hartford, Conn.) and David Ricci (Smithfield, R.I.) on the RIC back line.
Plymouth State is now 5-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in conference play this season, while RIC is now 5-4-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the LEC. PSU is also 3-0-3 in its last six games, allowing just two goals in that span; RIC is 0-3-2 in its last five outings.
Sophomore Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, R.I.) had several good scoring chances for RIC in the first half. His shot from about 40 yards out in the 17th minute bounced off the cross bar, and his shot off a rebound two minutes later sailed just over the goal. A third attempt from the top of the box in the 23rd minute just missed to the left.
PSU had the best scoring chance in the second half, but Moura made a diving save on a shot by sophomore Ted Karlstrand (Halmstad, Sweden).
Both teams had one more good scoring chance in the second overtime, but Lindeberg made a save on a shot by RIC junior Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, R.I.) near the left goal post, and PSU senior Jacob Sjoberg (Linkoping, Sweden) had the goalie out of position but his shot went wide right.
After playing four straight home games, PSU is on the road for its next three, beginning next Saturday with an LEC affair at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (4:00 p.m.). Rhode Island College plays again next Saturday with a Little East matchup at Eastern Connecticut State University (1:00 p.m.)
