Panthers allow three goals after only two in previous six games
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday evening in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field.
The Panthers, who had allowed only two goals in the previous six games (3-0-3), surrendered three goals to the Corsairs, two in the second half. UMass Dartmouth moves to 9-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the LEC, while Plymouth State drops to 5-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play.
UMass Dartmouth fired out of the gates, recording a goal only 2:42 minutes into play. Off a free kick, Adam Philbin (Cumberland, R.I.) crossed a beautiful ball which found the foot of a sliding Josh Chao (New Bedford, Mass.). The shot was too strong for Panther's goalkeeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) to handle and squirted out of his hands. Corsair forward Aelaf Solomon (Framingham, Mass.) was in the right spot at the right time and put the ball in the back of the net for his fourth score of the season.
With the score 1-0 in the second half, freshman Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) was taken down in the box by a Plymouth State defender, earning UMass Dartmouth a penalty shot. Chao stepped up and slipped a shot past Lindeberg for his seventh mark of the year.
Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal) pushed a shot into the net In the 80th minute to record his team-high ninth goal of the season off a pass from Solomon.
Corsair goalkeeper Luis Carranza stopped earned a clean sheet, as well as his fifth win of the season. For the Panthers, Lindeberg recorded 10 saves in the losing effort.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Bridgewater State for a non-conference game on Tuesday. while PSU is back in action Saturday with an LEC contest at UMass Boston.
