Eastern Connecticut defeats PSU Men’s Soccer to claim LEC title
Panthers fall short in season finale
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Cooper D'Ambrosio (Andover, Conn.) registered a goal and an assist Saturday evening as Eastern Connecticut State University clinched the Little East Conference men's soccer regular season title with a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University on Senior Day at Panther Field.
The Warriors complete the regular season at 10-3-4 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play, and will be the top seed in next week's LEC Tournament. PSU winds up the season with its fourth straight loss, finishing up at 5-8-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the Little East.
The upset-minded Panthers scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half. Freshman Jesper Fredholm (Enskede, Sweden) put a corner kick into play, and sophomore Ted Karlstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) headed the ball past the keeper on the left side to put the home team on top.
Eastern came back to tie the game with just over two minutes remaining in the first half as freshman Kyle Peterson (Ivoryton, Conn.) scored on a header from senior Carl Stensland (Storrs, Conn.) The Warriors had a 12-5 advantage in shots in the first half but the score was tied, 1-1.
Sophomore Tim Jennison (Coventry, Conn.) put the Warriors ahead for good midway through the second half, scoring his second goal of the season with an assist from D'Ambrosio, and D'Ambrosio added an insurance goal for the winners three minutes later to round out the scoring.
Eastern finished with a 17-1 margin in shots and a 17-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman keeper Greg Walton (Brunswick, Maine) made two saves to earn the win, while freshman Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) stopped four shots in the PSU goal.
