Ortega's goal lifts Chargers past in-state rival Panthers
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Senior Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.) scored the only goal of the game five minutes into the second half Saturday afternoon as Colby-Sawyer College edged Plymouth State University, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match played at The New Hampton School field.
Senior keeper Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) played a strong game in the Charger goal, making eight saves to post the win as Plymouth State outshot the visitors 13-5. Austin had shut out PSU last season in a 2-0 Charger win. PSU drops its season opener to fall to 0-1 while Colby-Sawyer is now 1-1-1 on the season.
Ortega's goal came in the 50th minute of the game after he took a pass near the sideline and fired a shot just inside the post from about 10 yards out for his first goal of the season.
PSU had the two best chances to score in the first half but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Junior Ted Karlstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) collected a rebound in the 20th minute but his shot went over the crossbar, and junior Connor Noe (Rochester, N.H.) put a header over the crossbar in the 37th minute.
Sophomore keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) finished with two saves in the Panther goal.
PSU looks for its first win Sunday (Sept. 7) with another Granite State rivalry match-up at New England College (5:00 p.m.), while Colby-Sawyer visits Clark University on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. kick-off.
