PSU Men’s Soccer doubles up Salem State

Rutherford scores twice as Panthers collect first win of season

NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Freshman Nick Rutherford (Batesman Bay, New South Wales) scored his first two collegiate goals Wednesday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 4-2 victory over Salem State University in non-conference men's soccer action at the New Hampton School Field.

Rutherford scored both his goals in the first 30 minutes of the contest, staking the home team to a 2-1 lead. The Panthers went on to hold a 3-2 margin at halftime, and added an insurance goal with seven minutes to play. PSU (1-2) collects its first win of the season while Salem State drops to 0-3.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard just five minutes into the match when Rutherford beat the defense and scored on a low liner from the left side. Salem State evened the score six minutes later when sophomore Kevin Gallo (Melrose, Mass.) knocked a rebound into the top right corner for his first goal of the season.

Rutherford gave PSU the lead back when he converted a through-ball from senior Christian Bua (Gilford, N.H.), scoring in the 29th minute from nearly the same spot as his first goal.  Junior Petro Masumbuko (Manchester, N.H./Central) pushed the lead to 3-1 in the 37th minute when he stole the ball in the Vikings' defensive zone, fired one shot one on goal, which was saved, and knocked in his own rebound for his first goal of the season.

Salem State got one goal back just two minutes later when sophomore Kelly Abreu (Salem, Mass.) converted a cross from the left corner by junior Josh Manchester (Ipswich, Mass.), making it a 3-2 Panther lead at intermission.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half but PSU tallied the only goal when classmate Ted Karlstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) scored on a corner kick from senior Aaron Smith (Loudon, N.H.)

PSU finished with a 17-9 margin in shots. PSU sophomore goalkeeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) earned the win, making four saves, while Salem State senior Nondas Kargakis (Heraklion, Greece) posted seven saves in the loss.

Plymouth State is back in action Saturday with another non-conference match at Castleton (4:00 p.m.), while Salem State plays its home opener Saturday at 2:00 p.m. vs. RPI.
