Panthers move to third place in Little East; Coach Wright posts 100th win

NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Juniors Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.) and Senad Mehmedovic (Concord, N.H.) scored goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Little East Conference match at The New Hampton School field.

PSU has won three of its last four games to improve to 5-7-1 overall, and upped its LEC mark to 3-1-1, alone in third place. UMD dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

The outcome also marked career victory No. 100 for head coach Rob Wright (100-105-24)(picured below left), who is in his 13th season at PSU.

Herbert opened the scoring for PSU in the 28th minute, converting  a pass from freshman Nick Rutherford (Batesman Bay, New South Wales) and slipping the ball past the diving goalkeeper for his first of the season. The Panthers extended the lead to 2-0 five minutes into the second half when a free kick by freshman Erik Ljunglof (Orebro, Sweden) was knocked down and controlled by Mehmedovic before the knocked in the eventual game-winner.

UMD got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute when sophomore Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) took control of the ball with his back to the goal, turned and fired just inside the post for his seventh goal of the year.

The Corsairs finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots. PSU sophomore keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made five saves for the win, while UMD sophomore Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) finished with two stops.

Plymouth State returns to action Wednesday with a non-conference match at Tufts University (3:00 p.m.)
