New England College downs PSU in Men’s Soccer

Herbert scores for Panthers in setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team took its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling to Granite State foe New England College, 3-1, at Arold Field.

The Pilgrims improved to 3-0 on the season while PSU drops to 1-1.

NEC got on the board a little more than a minute after the opening kickoff when sophomore Michael Scarbelis (North Andover, Mass.) finished off a short pass in the box from classmate Sina Samali (North Andover, Mass.) on a play set up by a long cross by junior Ronsard Masamba (Haverhill, Mass.). Scarbelis has five goals in NEC's first three games.

That ended up as the only goal of the first half with NEC having six shots to PSU's four.

NEC extended its lead at the 67-minute mark when junior Rizy Misiri (Concord, N.H.) dribbled down the left side, cut to the middle and fired a ball from 25 yards out into the right side of the net.

PSU got on the board 10 minutes later when sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) sent a nice through ball to senior Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.), who slid one under the goalie and into the goal off the left post for his first of the season.

With PSU pressing in the final 10 minutes, NEC sealed the win when Masamba scored on a play very similar to Misiri's goal except he broke to the middle from the right side before firing one in from long distance with just 4:32 remaining.

The Panthers had a couple more chances in the closing minutes but could not finish the play.

Sophomore keeper Dylan Mix (Charlestown, N.H.) earned the win for NEC in his season debut, making nine saves. Junior Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made five stops at the other end.

PSU is home again on Wednesday to host Daniel Webster College. NEC returns home to host Amherst College Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
