PSU Men’s Soccer battles Eastern Connecticut to 1-1 deadlock

Rutherford's goal pushes Panthers to draw

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University and Eastern Connecticut State University battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon in the Little East Conference men's soccer opener for both schools at Arold Field.

            Eastern got on the scoreboard late in the first half. Sophomore Tyler Gibbs (East Windsor, Conn.) with 3:50 on the clock to put the visitors in front. PSU answered nine minutes into the second half when sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) tallied the equalizer.

            PSU finished with a 12-10 margin in shots, including an 8-5 advantage in the opening 45 minutes and 2-1 in the extra sessions. Eastern out-shot the home team 4-2 in the second half.

            Junior keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) finished with three saves in the Panther goal while freshman Ryan Murphy (Cromwell, Conn.) made six saves in the Warriors' goal.

            Eastern Connecticut was picked to finish second in the LEC preseason poll while PSU was voted fifth.

            Plymouth State returns to action next Saturday with an LEC match at rival Keene State College (1:00 p.m.) Eastern Conn. plays again Tuesday at Gordon College at 4:00 p.m.
