Panthers win in Keene for first time since 2007
KEENE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half Saturday afternoon on its way to a 4-2 win over Keene State College in Little East Conference action at Owl Athletic Complex.
It was the first win for the Panthers in Keene since 2007. KSC falls to 3-5, and 1-1 in the LEC, while the Panthers are 3-3-1, and 1-0-1 in league play.
In a rough and tumble game that saw six yellow cards handed out, it was the Panthers who took the lead in the 19th minute. Senior Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mas.) fired a shot in traffic that took a massive deflection that wrongfooted KSC goalie Mark Keller for his third goal of the year.
PSU counterpart Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) kept Conor Leahy's shot out in the 27th minute as the Panthers kept the lead at halftime.
Keene State evened the score 10 minutes into the second half as Aidan Dean fed Conor Leahy down the left side, and Leahy's slide rule pass to Promise Kpee gave the sophomore the perfect space to thread his seventh goal of the season.
The Panthers retook the lead four minutes later, when freshman Micah Peterson (Fremont, N.H.) looped a cross-turn-shot that dropped into the net. PSU made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute when freshman Juan Rivera (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored his first of the year.
KSC made it a 3-2 game with 11 minutes to go. Kpee swept in a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box for his seventh goal in two games.
Lindeberg, who finished with eight saves, made three of them in the final five minutes. First, he denied Eddie Mercer's effort, and the immediate follow-up from Jacob Papanicolaou, then kept out a shot from Jacob Blueglass.
KSC returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Western New England University. Plymouth State hosts Norwich on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
