Rutherford's goal lifts Panthers to non-conference win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute Tuesday afternoon as Plymouth State University edged Castleton University, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Arold Field.

Rutherford dribbled down the left side, made a nifty move past a defender and fired a beautiful left-footed shot into the far right side of the goal. Rutherford now has a team-high five goals this season.

PSU had an excellent chance to extend its lead with 19 minutes remaining in the second half but a 20-yard blast by sophomore Erik Ljunglof (Orebro, Sweden) bounced off the cross bar.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half but neither was able to finish off a goal. PSU had more chances than Castleton in the second half, out-shooting the visitors 10-4 after the break to finish with a 16-9 margin. The visitors took 11 corner kicks to just two for the Panthers.

PSU junior keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made two saves to earn his first shutout of the season. Senior Amir Pasic (Burlington, Vt.) collected five saves in a tough-luck loss for the Spartans.

Plymouth State, 5-3-1 overall, continues its four-game home stand Saturday with a Little East Conference match-up against Western Connecticut State University (1:00 p.m.) Castleton, 8-3-1, continues a four-game road swing Saturday with a North Atlantic Conference game at the University of Maine Farmington (3:00 p.m.)
