PSU Men’s Soccer nips Western Conn. in 1-0 affair

Rutherford scores game-winner for Panthers in 88th minute

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute Saturday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference men's soccer action at Arold Field.

            Rutherford converted a crossing pass from senior Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.) with a shot to the left side. PSU also defeated Castleton 1-0 in its last outing, with Rutherford scoring the winning goal. Junior keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) completed the task at the other end of the field, making five saves for his second straight clean sheet.

            The Panthers improve to 6-3-1 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0-1. Western drops to 4-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Little East.

            Plymouth State had a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half and a 6-5 margin after the break. Sophomore Austin Tierney (East Hampton, Conn.) suffered the tough luck loss in the Western goal, finishing with seven saves.

            PSU continues its four-game home stretch on Wednesday at Arold Field, hosting Norwich University in a make-up match at 3:30 p.m.  Western Conn plays its next five games at home, beginning Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Trinity College.
