PSU Men’s Soccer nips Norwich in overtime

Rivera's goal lifts Panthers to fifth straight victory

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Juan Rivera (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of overtime Wednesday afternoon to give the Plymouth State University men's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Norwich University in a non-conference match at Arold Field.

Rivera took a beautiful diagonal lead pass from sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) in the middle of the field and shot the ball just past the goalie into the left side of the goal. It was Rivera's third goal of the season and his second game-winner.

PSU extended its winning streak to five games, improving to 7-3-1 overall, while Norwich had its five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-4-1.

Norwich had a 6-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes and scored the only goal of the first half. PSU junior keeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made a nice save on a shot by junior Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) in the 24th minute, but classmate Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H./Trinity) pounded the rebound into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers came back with an 8-3 margin in shots in the second half, and scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Senior Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.) beat his defender and fired a shot from the corner of the box for his fourth goal of the season, evening the score at 1-1.

PSU finished with a 13-10 margin in shots. Lindeberg finished with two saves for PSU to earn the victory while Norwich freshman keeper Stefan Skoff (San Jose, Calif.) made four saves at the other end in a tough-luck loss.

Plymouth State wraps up its four-game home stand Saturday on Senior Day at Arold Field with a Little East Conference match-up against Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.)  The Panthers' final four regular season games will be on the road. Norwich returns home to host Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference meeting Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
