Panthers end season with best record since 2006

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Massachusetts Boston scored a goal in each half and senior keeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) made five saves Wednesday afternoon as the third-seeded Beacons defeated second-seeded Plymouth State University, 2-0, in a Little East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal game at Arold Field.

The Beacons, which lost to Plymouth State 1-0 in overtime last Saturday in Boston, costing them home-field advantage for the semifinal game, got revenge with Wednesday's outcome. The loss ends PSU's season at 9-7-1, its best record since the 2006 team finished 10-7-2. UMB improves to 15-4-0, establishing a program record for wins in a season.

UMB advances to the LEC Championship game on Saturday against Rhode Island College, which will be held at James Cotter Field at Boston College High School. The Beacons earned the right to host the title game when fourth-seeded RIC upset top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, 1-0. UMB defeated RIC in the regular season match, 2-0.

Seniors Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) and Elton Teixeira (Fogo, Cape Verde) tallied the goals for UMB. Dasilva put the Beacons on the board in the 15th minute, blasting a shot from the right side of the box that went off the keeper's hands, up into the air with topspin and bounced into the goal. Texeira doubled the Beacon lead in the 61st minute with a direct kick from 30 yards out that went in the upper right corner.

The visitors had a slim 11-10 margin in shots for the game, with each team taking four corner kicks. Rosales made five saves for his fifth shutout of the season, while PSU junior goalkeeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) finished with one save.
