Lindeberg turns aside nine shots in non-conference loss
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A late goal in the 85th minute gave Middlebury College a 1-0 win over Plymouth State University in non-conference men's soccer action at South Street Field on Sunday afternoon.
Middlebury controlled the offensive zone for much of the day, but freshman goalie Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) was able to keep them off the scoreboard. Middlebury fired 14 first half shots, and peppered the Plymouth goal with 23 shots over the full 90 minutes, but were unable to break through until the 85th minute.
Middlebury had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 39th minute when sophomore Fazl Shaikh (Scarsdale, N.Y.) fired a knuckling shot from 15 yards away but Lindeberg made a diving save to his right to preserve the scoreless game.
Plymouth State had a chance to get on the board in the 50th minute, but a header from junior Dan Shaw (Winchester, England) went just wide to the left of the Middlebury goal.
With Middlebury continuing to pressure the PSU defense, sophomore Drew Goulart (Weston, Mass.) worked the ball up the left side of the field, crossing it along the end line where it deflected off a PSU defender for the game's only tally.
Middlebury held a 23-2 advantage in shots for the game, and took eight corner kicks to PSU's one. Lindeberg finished with nine saves, while lowering his goals against average to a stingy 1.77.
Plymouth State will be back at home on Arold Field for a non-conference match with Norwich University on Wednesday, with kick-off set for 3:30 p.m.
