PSU Men’s Soccer wins in OT in key LEC match at Keene State

Rutherford scores both goals for Panthers

KEENE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team defeated rival Keene State College in overtime by a 2-1 score in a big Little East Conference (LEC) match up at the Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.

Senior Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) scored both goals for the Panthers, his team leading fourth and fifth goals of the year. Rutherford scored the game-winner with just 1:10 remaining in extra time to seal the second win for Plymouth State at Keene in two years.

The Panthers took the lead early in the first half when sophomore Joni Hongisto (Kaarina, Finland) fed a hard pass to Rutherford at the top of the box, who buried the goal in the top right corner at 10:55.

Keene State tied things up 20 minutes later when senior William Salta (Laconia, N.H.) found a through ball on his foot in the Panthers' box, putting the ball past freshman goalkeeper Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden).

Early in the second half the Panthers had a chance to get a go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Freshman Erik Armskog (Floda, Sweden) had his penalty turned away by Keene State senior Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and the game remained knotted at 1-1.

In overtime the Owls got two shots off early, but Lindeberg made one save while the other shot missed high. The Panthers outshot the Owls 6-3 in the extra frame and ended things with just 1:10 remaining. After two frantic shots inside Keene State's box, the ball popped free on the goal line and Rutherford fired home the game-winning goal after a scramble in front of the net.

Lindeberg picked up the win for the Panthers, finishing with five saves.

Keene State outshot the Panthers 22-19 in a game which saw a total of 35 fouls. Four cards were issued during the match, including a red card on the KSC goalie after the game-winning score.

Plymouth State improves to 3-8-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the LEC, while Keene State falls to 6-3-3 and 2-1-1 in conference play. The Panthers return to action next Saturday (Oct. 14) when they travel to LEC foe Southern Maine for a 2:30 p.m. contest. The Owls travel to Lasell College for a non-conference match on Monday.
