Johansson named Defensive Player of the Week

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After helping lead the Plymouth State University men's soccer team to ties against Southern Maine and UMass Boston, sophomore Filip Johansson (Lulea, Sweden.) has earned Little East Conference (LEC) weekly recognition by being named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Johansson helped anchor the Plymouth State defense as the Panthers tied a pair of LEC contests to earn two points in the league standings. His play helped keep Southern Maine off the scoreboard through two overtime periods as PSU held on for a 2-2 tie against the Huskies on Wednesday.

On Saturday he helped the PSU defense hold UMass Boston, the fourth-highest scoring team in the league, without a goal as the teams settled for a scoreless draw.

This season Johansson has anchored a defense that has let up an average of 1.45 goals per game in conference play, the third lowest mark among league opponents. This week the defense stepped up in a big way, surrendering just 1.00 goals per game and shutting out a strong UMass Boston offense.

PSU (1-4-3, 0-1-2 LEC) has a pair of road matches this week. The Panthers head to Endicott on Tuesday (Oct. 8) for a 4:00 p.m. start before visiting LEC foe Rhode Island College for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday (Oct. 12).
