Six Panthers post New England D-III qualifying marks
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Six members of the Plymouth State University men's indoor track & field team reached qualifying standards for the New England Division III Championships in February as the team took second place at the Panther Invitational at the George E. Davis '63 Track in the Bank of New Hampshire Field House in ALLWell North on Saturday.
PSU finished with 134 team points, trailing only NCAA Division II Franklin Pierce University for the team title. The Ravens amassed 214 points in the victory. The Panthers finished ahead of Colby-Sawyer College (64), Eastern Connecticut State University (64), Regis College (48), Thomas College of Maine (47), the University of Maine-Farmington (43) and Newbury College (24).
Despite being idle for six weeks the Panthers put together a strong meet. Junior Kyle Saunders (Hudson, N.H.) set a new track record in the 500-meter dash, finishing tied for first with a time of 1:10.40. Classmates Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) and Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) both finished ahead of the previous track record time for the mile run. Franklin Pierce freshman Hugo Arlabosse finished first with a record time of 4:18.22, with Bartlett (4:20.40) right on his heels. Brunnette's time of 4:24.50 was also faster than the previous mark of 4:26.01, set by Bartlett in the Panthers' last meet on Dec. 9.
Both Bartlett and Brunnette qualified for the New England Championships.
Freshmen Joey Baylus (Loudon, N.H.) and Terrell Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) anchored a strong hurdles showing for PSU. Baylus finished first in the finals with a time of 8.91 to qualify for New England's, while Lewis finished second in the finals (9.05), but reached qualifying standards during the preliminaries with an 8.82 run. Lewis also posted a New England's qualifying mark of 1.93m in the high jump to finish first.
Junior Evan Dolecki (New Hartford, Conn.) hit qualifying marks in the long jump (6.44m) and triple jump (13.11m), taking third in both events, while sophomore Derek Davies (Londonderry, N.H.) finished first in the pole vault with a height of 4.30m to also qualify for New England's.
The Panther relay teams performed well. The foursome of Baylus, Davies, Lewis and junior Isaiah Bolden (Dover, N.H.) took second in the 4x200-meter relay, finishing just 0.57 seconds off school record pace, while the 4x800-meter relay team, comprised of senior Brendan Polichronopoulos (Penacook, N.H.), Brunnette, sophomore Noah Byington (Hanscom AFB, Mass.) and Saunders, finished second in 8:39.00.
Other PSU highlights included Bartlett's second place finish in the 800-meter run (2:01.94), closely followed by Polichronopoulos' third place finish in 2:04.12, a fourth place finish for senior Dean Squires Jr. (Derry, N.H.) in the weight throw (11.54m), and sophomore Zach Bassett (Pascoag, R.I.), who finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24.59. Junior Isiah Trask (Turner, Maine) also narrowly missed out of reaching the finals of the 60-meter dash, finishing ninth in the preliminaries in 7.47, just 0.02 shy of the top-eight.
