Brunnette named Track Athlete of the Week after wins at LEC/Alliance Championship
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University's three-time Little East Conference (LEC) and New England Alliance (NEA) defending champion in the 3000 meter run was honored by the LEC on Monday.
Junior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) was named the LEC Men's Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Week after registering a pair of wins at the LEC and NEA Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Providence Career and Technical School on Saturday.
Brunnette earned his third-straight title in the 3000 meter run by nearly ten seconds. His time of 8:42.50 was just shy of seven seconds faster than his championship performance from last year.
Brunnette also added his second consecutive individual title in the mile run after finishing in 4:21.18, roughly three seconds behind his personal-best.
In both races Brunnette demonstrated his patient strategy, sitting back in second place for the majority of the race before turning on the jets over the final laps to register the victories.
Plymouth State finished third among LEC competition, while placing sixth among NEA teams, a combination of LEC and Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) schools.
Brunnette will be competing in both events this Saturday (Feb. 17) at the New England DIII Regional Championships at Middlebury College. Last year he took fifth in the mile run, but did not compete in the 3000 meters, though he did qualify for the NCAA National Championship in that event where he place 14th.
