Brunnette named Track Athlete of the Year
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University junior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) was honored by the Little East Conference (LEC) on Wednesday after being named the LEC Men's Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Year.
Brunnette, the only Panther in program history to compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, has put together another solid season. After an extended fall with the cross country team that saw him earn All-American status with a 25th place finish in the NCAA Championship race, Brunnette has competed at five different meets and seven total races this winter.
Among the seven races he has posted two first place finishes, two seconds, a pair of thirds and one fourth place while competing in the mile run, 3000-meter run and taking a leg of the 4x800 meter relay.
Brunnette swept the mile run and 3000-meters at the LEC and New England Alliance Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 10. His 8:42.50 in the 3000-meters secured his third straight LEC/NEA title, while his 4:21.18 in the mile gave him back-to-back championships.
He followed that with an impressive performance in the mile run at the DIII New England Track & Field Championship on Feb. 17. He was one of eight runners to eclipse the previous track record, finishing third overall with a career-best 4:15.22 to earn All-New England honors. The converted time is the 21st fastest mile time in the country this winter.
Brunnette also posted a second place finish in the mile run at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational hosted by Tufts University on Jan. 27. His time of 4:19.37 is his second fastest of the year.
On Feb. 3 he ran his fastest 3000-meters of the year, posting an 8:29.97 to finish third at the Tufts Cupid Challenge. His time is currently the 24th best in the nation.
Brunnette will race once more this winter, hoping to secure a spot at the NCAA Division III Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. He will race at the Tufts Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, Mar. 3.
