Panthers slip to #22 in second national index

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's indoor track and field team remained ranked among the nation's best when the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its second NCAA Division III Top 25 rankings on Tuesday night.

Despite a number of strong individual performances at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational over the weekend, PSU slipped three spots to #22 after holding the #19 spot last week. North Central College retained the top spot, with two Wisconsin state schools, Oshkosh and Whitewater, rounding out the top three.

The Panthers, along with the University of Southern Maine (#10), remain the only Little East Conference (LEC) schools to appear among the top 25 in the index.

The computer rankings were first introduced during the 2011 season. Mathematical formulae based on current national descending-order lists in all events are used to compile a team's ranking. The purpose of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The ranking is the second of seven leading up the national championships in early March. The complete index is available at the USTFCCCA website,

Plymouth State hosts the Panther Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 2).
