Brunnette leads Panthers with sixth place in mile run
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) led Plymouth State University with a sixth place finish in the mile run Saturday at the 2016 New England Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship at the MIT Indoor Track.
The meet featured nearly 50 schools and over 450 athletes competing in the two-day event, with qualifying performances required to be entered in the meet. PSU was represented in four events and finished in 23rd place in the team standings.
Brunnette ran the mile in a time of 4:28.79 to place sixth. He had won the 3,000 meters at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships last week at PSU.
Freshmen Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) competed in the 1,000 meter run for PSU, placing 12th in a time of 2:37.02. Bartlett also captured the 1,000 at the Little East/Alliance meet last weekend.
Bartlett and Brunnette were joined by sophomore Brendan Polichronopoulos (Penacook, N.H.), and freshman Kyle Saunders (Hudson, N.H.) for a strong finish in the 4x800 meter relay, as the Panthers placed 11th in a time of 8:10.60.
Freshman Evan Dolecki (New Hartford, Conn.) was PSU's top representative in the field events, placing 13th in the long jump with a leap 20-feet, 3.75 inches (6.19m).
Brunnette and Bartlett and freshman sprinter Isaiah Bolden (Dover, N.H.) have qualified to represent Plymouth State at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 4-5 at Staten Island, N.Y.
The Panthers are in their first season since reinstating the sport as a varsity program. Plymouth State had men's track and field in the late 1960s and 1970s before discontinuing the program prior to the 1980 season.
