Bartlett, Brunnette post top-five finishes for Panthers

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshmen Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) and Sam Brunnette (Jericho, Vt.) posted top-five finishes Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's track & field team at the Little East Conference Championships and the New England Alliance Championships held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Bartlett captured fourth place in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:05.02, while Brunnette took fifth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 10:01.68. Both Panther runners had previously qualified for next Saturday's New England Division III Championships in their event.

The Panthers finished in seventh place in the Little East scoring with 35 points. The University of Southern Maine took the team title with 182 points, followed by runner-up UMass Dartmouth with 170. PSU placed 11th out of 12 schools in the Alliance scoring, besting only Massachusetts Maritime Academy, as Westfield State University edged Southern Maine for the title.

Other top 10 finishes for the Panthers included a seventh place in the pole vault by freshman Matt Elsker (Pittsfield, Mass.), who matched his season-high performance with a vault of 4.10 meters (13'5.25"); an eighth place by freshman Isaiah Bolden (Dover, N.H.) in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing in a time of 16.60 seconds (he ran a 16.22 in the prelims); and an eighth-place finish by freshman Evan Dolecki (New Hartford, Conn.) in the triple jump, whose mark of 12.94 meters (42'5.5") was just 0.01 meters shy of the New England Championships qualifying mark. Dolecki also placed 12th in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters (20'1").

PSU has qualified athletes in six individual events at next weekend's New England Championships at Springfield College – Bolden in the 100 meter dash and the 110 meter high hurdles; Bartlett in the 1500 meters; Brunnette in the 3000 meter steeplechase; Elsker in the pole vault; and Dolecki in the long jump.

The Panthers are in their first season since reinstating the sport as a varsity program. Plymouth State had men's track and field in the late 1960s and 1970s before discontinuing the program prior to the 1980 season.
